Stains

A softwood such as Norwegian Spruce - an affordable, strong, solid timber option - can be treated with about 20 different stains, such as Cherry, Antique Pine, etc, to create the required look or to match with current interior decoration.

Staining hardwoods is usually not required, as these timbers have enough character of their own without adding any sort of artificial colour.

Following staining, Norwegian Spruce would normally be finished with a wax, oil or varnish, as with a hardwood.
