Commissioning Furniture
You can commission furniture from Gathering Moss.
At no extra cost, an item can be made to order; it will cost no more than the equivalent item in our showroom or on our website.
If you would like to commission furniture, you can initially get a rough quote by contacting us with either a description and preferably a diagram or a photo of a similar item.
Before finalising any commission:
- Measure your space and ensure the item you want will fit comfortably - think about whether there's enough room around it, whether doors or drawers will open without getting in the way.
- Check your commissioned furniture can be moved into your space, think about access through doorways, past existing furniture or built-in fittings and up stairs.
- If you think it might be difficult to move the piece of furniture you'd like into your space, think about talking to our furniture maker. Tables, for example, can be made with removable legs.
- Think about the type of wood you would like to use. Gathering Moss can use any available wood (although there may be questions of availability and price). See our pages on reclaimed/sustainable wood, both hardwood, softwood.
- Think about the finish: if you require hardwood, it is unlikely you would want to use any kind of stain; if softwood, is used your furniture can be finished with a variety of stains.
- Finishes available include oil, laquer, varnish, and wax. What you choose depends on what is appropriate to the wood and to your other furniture, as well as, on the room where the furniture will live, eg oil is generally not suitable in a bathroom.
- Our furniture-maker can offer you advice on all aspects of your commissioned furniture.
- Completion: construction timescales vary depending on the number of orders we have already taken on, the complexity of the task and the availability of the wood required. Do let us know if you have a deadline; we will aim to meet it, if at all possible. However, do bear in mind our furniture-maker crafts your specific design to a high quality and this does take time.
- Delivery: if you are local to the shop, our furniture-maker may be able to deliver to you at no extra cost depending on other demands. If you require delivery further afield, please contact Sheila for pricing.
You can commission furniture using our online form, in person at the shop or by contacting Sheila by email or telephone.
